House - south side

Campagne les Alliers was built in 1699. It was probably one farm originally; our neighbours occupy what was the main farm house, and our house was originally the stables and buildings for raising silk worms, a significant industry at that time. The main entrance-way with the fireplace and the overhead bedroom served as the lodgings for the farmhands. Over the years the main farm house stayed in one piece in terms of ownership, whereas the stables and the 'dependences' were sold to at least four different parties, a typical situation in Provence. In the early 1990s someone from the Grambois area managed to buy two of the pieces which included the present day kitchen, main entrance way and the bedroom above it, and the bedroom at the top of the outside stairs. In 1994 the house was sold to the last owner who subsequently managed to buy the other two pieces on the inside, undertake the major renovations as well as make sense of the land holdings surrounding the house. The rock walls around the pool are from the original 'pigeonnier' that stood where the living room terrace (with the stone BBQ) is now.

The inside of the house is charming and intimate. The original stone walls and the ceiling beams have been preserved in most rooms. The solid stone walls and the terra cotta tiles throughout the house provide a cool interior in the heat of the Provencal summer. The house is tastefully furnished with antique furniture that perfectly suits the Provencal style.
